Explore Atlas Copco’s history between 1873 and 2013

On February 21, 1873, Atlas was founded in Stockholm, Sweden, as a manufacturer of products for railways. 140 years later the company is an industry benchmark with world-leading positions in compressors, tools and rock drills, but also in many other product areas.

With a tradition of innovation dating back to the Group’s foundation in 1873, Atlas Copco’s business has evolved into four distinct business areas, with today’s equipment delivering unparalleled levels of efficiency. After 140 years of sustainable, profitable growth, the products and services range from compressed air and gas equipment to construction and mining equipment and industrial tools and assembly systems.

On our dedicated history web site you can read about the Group’s development during the first 140 years, find out more about our 11 presidents, and learn about our innovations and expansions.

If you are interested in the more recent development, after February 21, 2013, please stay on this site and go to The Group.

When we celebrated 140 years of history we wrote a book about our achievements. Welcome to dig deep into the history of an industrial icon. Read online or download as a pdf. Enjoy!
